Christmas is my favourite holiday of the year. I love the weather (nothing like a White Christmas), the movies (my daughter buys me a classic every year), the food (the only time of the year I bake), the festivities (when I'm not working), the decorations (I love all the lights), the atmosphere (everyone is so joyful), and seeing family and friends.
In the beginning of October I found Diane's In My Own Style blog through Pinterest that shows how to make a 'Snowflake Window Treatment'. I fell in love...I collect snowmen and what a great idea for a backdrop.
In November I got to work...
I picked up the pom pom yarn, Creatology large glitter, foam sheets, and I already had Martha Stewart fine glitter and Elmer's spray adhesive. Yep, I made a lot more work for myself, but I wanted the glitter/sparkle for Christmas. I mean, it's Christmas!! (I didn't end up using the sparkly pom poms in the package below.)
I Googled patterns for snowflakes (forgetting Diane included some in her tutorial) and started making templates. Like Diane, after a few I just did my own thing. It's all in the folding of the paper really, cut whatever you think will look good.
Then I got my foam sheets and with my knife started tracing out the snowflakes. This wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be...sure they aren't perfect, but once I tidy them up and decorate I don't think you'll be able to tell.
My second snowflake
Knowing I needed quite a few of these, after cutting 5 from the foam, the rest I just used the paper snowflakes and glittered them. I threaded the snowflakes through skewers and hung them on bottles to dry.
I measured how long I wanted them and cut the yarn. I tied a knot at the top to slip over the S-hooks.
I had S-hooks I'd bought at Ikea in the summer for some of my garden decor.
These work perfect to hang them from the top of the screen doors.
And now to assemble! I used my glue gun to glue the snowflakes to the pom poms on the yarn.
I tied 3 together with a 24 gauge silver coloured wire.
And tied them to the last pom pom.
They hang quietly for the most part, until the cats decide to play with the balls.
My daughter loved them and wanted shorter ones, here's hers hanging in the pool room door to the courtyard out back.
Do you cut out snowflakes to decorated your home for the season? I'm thinking these could be left up past Christmas, don't you think they'd work for the winter decor?
I'm sharing with:

That is a lovely decoration and it can be used all winter long. I tend to leave up my snowpeople and snowy decorations during January. I've got a similar idea in my window using snowflakes that I have crocheted over the years.
ReplyDeleteI think the crocheted snowflakes must look lovely! I collect snowmen and hate to put them away after the holidays so I too leave a few out, a couple stay out all year! lol
DeleteDebbie :)
How pretty and sparkly - the Pom Pom yarn is so cute too :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks Vicki! I agree it looks good, makes a big difference. :)
Deletehey there - i made these last year, too - that was after i joined Pinterest and before I had a blog of my own. I love the way yours came out - the glitter adds a nice touch. I'm planning to do this again this year - but i have get new yarn - the mice made a home in my pomp-a-doodle!! I even have a stack of extra snowflakes left that I never got to putting up last year - so as soon as i get my yarn - i'm all set!!
ReplyDeletebreida
Oh those darn mice! I'd love to see yours when you finish!
DeleteHow inventive!! Great idea Debbie!
ReplyDeleteThanks Linda, but it wasn't my idea...I copied the idea from Diane at In My Own Style. I linked to her above. :)
DeleteAbsolutely gorgeous!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun idea for snowflakes. I didn't even know there was a pom pom yarn.
ReplyDeleteI found it at Michael's but they didn't have white. I found the white at Walmart! So many things it could be used for.
DeleteDebbie :)
Now I know why you liked my snowflake chandy!!! Love this idea!!!! Will try to do this next time on the windows, these are beautiful! Thanks for sharing and for visiting my blog too!
ReplyDeleteThank you, too! I'd love to see what you do with yours!
DeleteDebbie :)
These are wonderful but I cracked up at the end about the cats! CATS are the problem with alot of decorating ideas! I can't PUT THINGS where I might want them initially due to my cat. My niece has two kittens and has said that her lovely tree has pretty much turned into a "Charlie Brown Tree"
ReplyDeleteAnd any of us cat lovers could go on and on, huh? :)
LOL Oh yes, cats can be a problem with Christmas decorations! So far mine have left the tree alone, but I'm not holding my breath that it stays that way. And I have to admit...I do love watching them play with a new 'toy'. lol
DeleteLove this idea Debbie-it turned out so pretty!! You have a gorgeous blog (I have many posts to catch up on!!). I hope you have a wonderful day:)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Tani :)

ReplyDeleteThanks Tiffany, I do too. :)
DeleteDebbie, this is so pretty, I can't believe you took the time to carve the snowflakes by hand! I love the little bells, it's a thoughtful detail :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, sometimes I wish I could open the window so the bells ring in the breeze, but it's too cold. lol :)

ReplyDeleteIt was fun to do, too! :)
DeleteHi Debbie - They look great - beautiful! I love the addition of the jingle bells :) My cat would play with them all day, but I love the idea. I carefully stored mine from last year and hung them in my studioffice this year. Last year they were in my dining room which I hardly ever go in. This year I want to enjoy them more.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link. I hope you and your family have a very Merry Christmas.
My best- Diane
I'm so happy you like how mine turned out, Diane! Thanks for the inspiration. And I'll have to find something to store them in for next year. (I think they need to be flattened more, they are curling a bit now)
DeleteMerry Christmas to you and yours as well :)
i love the bling with the little bells!! and your new header pic for the holidays!!
ReplyDeleteOh Debbie,
