Today I'm remembering...family and veterans.
William (Scotty) McColgan, my grandfather served under Conn Smythe (long time owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs) and saved his life when they were under attack. Grandpa is mentioned often in the book about Smythe. He survived the war to live into his 90's.
Margaret Borthwick (my mother-in-law) is marked with the red X
Charles Borthwick (my father-in-law), his brother Oliver and Marg's brother Hugh Davidson are marked with the Xs.
Newspaper articles from their time in World War II.
Many families lost loved ones, and the Borthwick's were no exception. As the Chaplain quoted in the article about my husband's uncle, "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13
I believe that verse of the Bible applies to all our men and women who serve their countries. And this is the day to remember and honour every one of them.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
- John McCrae

Thanks for posting this. We as well remember those who lost their lives for us.

You're welcome, Linda. I have to admit, I can't remember reciting the poem in school...I do have lots of wonderful memories, but that one is missing!
