My husband is amazing. I just have to say it.
Warning - Picture Overload (I couldn't help it, really!)
Larry ends up with a lot of empty cable spools from his business.
Empty cable spools
I usually try to find something to do with them. He's becoming very good at not throwing anything out until he checks with me first. Smart man. (so, who's really the hoarder here?)
I saw a couple sitting on their sides...and they looked like...wheels!
We have a lot of old wood and pallets lying around, too.
When I asked if he could build me a garden cart, he said sure. I took measurements, drew out what I wanted, we discussed options, took measurements again and he had it done in about an hour! What a guy...he was so fast I didn't get any photos while he was assembling the sides.
While he was building, I needed to make the 'wheels' look old. I had clipped a post by HomaStyle to my boards on Hometalk. I do get a lot of old wood, but there are times when I have to use newer looking wood. HomaStyle's post was about making new wood look like barn wood. Perfect for what I needed to do to the cable spools.
I had mixed up my vinegar with steel wool a few months ago, but never did use it. So it's been sitting waiting...and I think it got a little too strong.
Tea and steel wool vinegar
I painted the tea on first, and when that coat dried, I painted on the steel wool vinegar.

Look at the difference now!
When Larry had the sides assembled, we checked to see if it fit inside the spools. Perfect! Now he can add the bottom. The spools look too new still, but their 'axles' will get rusty once they are out in the spring rains.
Attaching the bottom
It's a nice, snug fit.
Look Deb, it rolls! haha
I just love this wood with the letters and numbers on it.
I think he did an awesome job?
He still has to make the 'handle', and attach the crate to the wheels. He will be doing that soon. But even without it, I am in love.
Pickle seems to end up in a lot of pictures
Since we are still covered in snow, I can't fill it with flowers for the garden yet. So I took a couple of my stag-horn ferns and a variegated Boston fern to decorate it.
Yes, our garden cart is on the pool table.
Since the cable spools are not real wheels, this is a stationary garden cart. :)
I can't wait for spring and to see this new garden addition filled with colourful annuals. Now to decide which ones I want to put in it.
I painted this watering can to give it a rusted look. Not quite what I was going for, but it's better than it was.
Edit - The handle was finally built & added to this cart, and it still needs to be aged. It was given as a present so I didn't get it decorated for pictures, but I hope you get the idea. I have some more spools and wood, now to make another for me! :)
Do you have any old carts or wagons you put plants in?

We don't have. What a good Idea to put the plants in a cart or wagon. The cart looks nice and the good thing is, it is out of recycled materials! Good Job!

Thanks Judy, I like recycling junk in my garden, I love the look. :)
DeleteYou nailed it with this one!!! What an amazingly creative use of those spools & what a great helper you have in your husband. How awesome is it when we can get the people around us used to saving things for our playtime?! Lol. I'm totally pinning this & making one this summer since I have about a million spools out back. I'll be sure to link back to you when I do. Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteIt absolutely fabulous Debbie - I'm amazed ( and jealous of course - but that's a good thing LOL )
ReplyDeleteXOX
OMG, Debbie - it's amazing!! Can I borrow your husband for a few hours/days/weeks?
ReplyDeleteSeeing the spools brought me back to my first apartment where I had a huge 4' spool as a coffee table. That matched the stereo stand made of bricks and planks of wood. Oh to decorate like that again!!
Thanks, Heather! Sure, I'll let him know he's being lent out. :)
DeleteI remember those days, and using anything from bricks to even beer cases for table supports. lol
Debbie that is awesome! I love it! and I have a ridiculous amount of cable spools!! Thanks for the morning inspiration!
ReplyDeleteI don't have any carts or wagons ... so if Larry could get in touch with me, I'll tell him how to get to my house so he can bring me one :)
ReplyDeleteYou both did a fabulous job ... you designing and Larry building.
Fantastic Idea!! I picked up at the end of last season a antique wagon to decorate.
ReplyDeleteThanks, I forgot all about it....We put it in the garage rafters.
This is a fantastic project! Way back in my hippie days, I made a cable spool table. I'd LOVE to have a little cart like this one in my yard. So cute!!
ReplyDeleteYou guys are just amazing!!!!! I love your cart. Yes, I do have a cart that my friend gave me that her husband put together. I do love it too! Nancy
ReplyDeleteThis will be the perfect touch for your garden! I think the reclaimed wood is wonderful and it should wear well outside. Can't wait to see what you do with your cart when spring really gets here!
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome! So jealous of gals who have handy husbands. sigh.
ReplyDeleteWow! I love this project. I have a couple spools and a few pallets, I'd never thought to do this, LOVE what you came up with. I'm a new follower, I'd love a visit whenever you have the time. I look forward to hanging out here :)
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh...this turned out fabulously!!! Great job! Just too cute for words!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Julie :)
DeleteThat's so cool! I'm not nearly handy enough to do something like that (or envision it, even).
ReplyDeleteI think it was the way my husband left them sitting on the ground...together on their side, they looked like wheels and it just grew from there. I'm not usually that creative either. lol
DeleteThanks, Robin! :)
For our first anniversary my husband gave me a green garden cart with a stack of garden tools. I kept it going for years even to the point of salvaging wheels off other carts. It is now in its retirement home holding begonias in the summer. I love that cart. I rarely see spools with wooden cores any more - they are mostly cardboard.
ReplyDeleteYou my dear are the clever one. After you get done making me the hot glue gun stand, you can whip one of these up for me:) You were the one that made the glue gun stand right? Gosh my brain is fried, please pardon the slip up if so..LOL.
ReplyDeleteLucky you! I only wish I could get my hands on some of these type spools, large and small - the cart looks great!
ReplyDeleteDebbie,
ReplyDeleteThat is an awesome project~Love it for sure! I haven't used the vinegar treatment yet, seen it on different blogs. I really do like how it aged the wood so I might have to try that soon.
You're hubby did a great job building it from your plans.
Is that a pool ball clock in the background? How original if so, I've not seen one of those. Has my mind racing since I have some extra pool balls sitting in a box.
I used to have a garden cart that someone had lovingly put together, or rather a wheelbarrow planter but my munchkin got a hold of it and it didn't last long. Now I am inspired to make one like yours! Very creative repurposing. I repurposed the broken wheelbarrow. Check it out on http://www.patinaparadise.blogspot.com/2013/02/wheelbarrow-planter-turned-display-easel.html.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Lucy. And your new easel looks fabulous, love the bark edging. :)
DeleteThis is the cutest thing ever! I want one for my garden!! You are lucky to have a husband that is on the lookout for you. I think mine would try to hide them ha ha!
ReplyDeleteXO,
Christy
Thank you, Christy! And I have to admit, it took a while to get him on board with 'hoarding' junk. lol :)
DeleteI think your little wagon is adorable and a wonderful repurposing of old materials! I also like the homemade glue gun stand a few posts back.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Jennifer! I appreciate your comment and the visit. :)
DeleteI love your new/old cart! I've been wanting to try the vinegar and steel wool stain. It really did the trick on the spools!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Tricia! Yes, the vinegar solution worked very fast, too. :)
DeleteThis is awesomely creative! Great job to you guys!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Angela! :)
DeleteWhat a fantastic project. I love the way you aged the wood-totally charming! I'm visiting you back (and pinning this) from the Power of Pinterest party. Thanks for sharing!
