I've seen home made snow globes all over the net recently. Of course I had to try it myself. After a couple trial and errors (I just bluffed my way through, forgot to check any instructions) I figured out how to make it work. With a little suggestion from my husband!
I used mason jars for my snow globes.
I spray painted the lids with gold and sprinkled glitter on when the paint was still wet. I used clear silicone to seal the lids.
I needed something to raise the little trinkets I was adding so they stood above the neck of the jars. I wanted to make a snowdrift, to make it look like they were standing on the snow. I tried a couple different things, but when wet, they fell apart. My husband asked if we had any styrofoam...genius! And we had some that was shaped perfectly! So I cut what I needed to fit the lid and voila...a two tiered snow bank. I used hot glue to attach the styrofoam to the lids, and the trinkets to the styrofoam. Before I screwed the lids in place, I filled with water, added glitter and ran a strip of silicone around the lip of the jars to make them watertight.
A little hard to see the 'snowbank' through the glass but at least the tree & snowman show above the neck. The snowman and tree are from the Dollar Store. The mason jars, paint, silicone and glitter I had on hand.
The second one has a lady on a bench feeding a dove with a tree and light post behind her, again from the Dollar Store. They are on the upper part of the snowbank. I never thought to check, but the trees turned the water an aqua colour! Karen, from The Graphics Fairy DIY, bleached her trees for another project, this will definitely be something I'll do with the next ones!
I have them displayed on the buffet in the kitchen with some of my snowmen and milk glass collections.
I sure do love my snowmen! :)
So I consider this a fail...even though my husband and everyone loved them. They just didn't turn out the way I planned. Oh well, next year...
Have you ever had a fail on a project that looked to be very easy? Are you as picky as I am on my finished products?

Your snow globes look cute in your holiday display! The color of the water matches the blue.
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried to make any yet but I was reading a tutorial on them at Martha Stewart's site (I think) and she used baby oil instead of water. Yours turned out very pretty and goes with your theme.
Very nice! Nancy
ReplyDeleteVery creative and they look nice. They go with your cute snowmen and snowboys.
ReplyDeleteDebbie,
ReplyDeleteYour snow globes turned out adorable. I had plans to make some too this year, after seeing so many on the net, but just have not got around to it yet. Maybe next year though.
Too darn cute! :)
