April Hailstorm and Chickens

Hailstorm-and-chickens

We got pummeled last night with a summer-type storm and it's only April. It started out as pounding rain, loud thunder and blinding lightening.

Then came the hail...thank Heavens there are no crops planted yet, the farmers would have lots of damage, it came down that hard & fast.

Hail-from-Hailstorm

It was very large, the largest I've seen in ages! And it was so loud...when we went to the pool room to watch the storm, we couldn't talk over the noise. The pool room's roof is made of corrugated plastic, during heavy rain it's deafening, and even worse with hail.

I have to say though, it was pretty neat...Mother Nature was really angry.

So, this morning, I'm looking at photos from last summer, trying to remember what it's like. Our chickens love watermelon, it's a sweet treat on a hot, dry day.

Did you get the storm last night?

  2. We certainly did! Around 9:30, I wasn't sure what hit us as we were watching DWTS with the blinds closed. My husband was so worried about the cars - would they get dented? But as fast as it blew it, out it went and there's not a shred of evidence of it today.

  3. We got some rain last night but not a storm like you did. Wow, those hailstones were big. I didn't know chickens would eat watermelon, must be a lovely cool treat for them on a hot day. I've started to do a few odd garden jobs ... moving some pots outside to benefit from the rain, add a few garden decorations, and lots of planning in my head.

  4. No hail for us just lots of rain with a thunderstorm and windy and it got warm out there from 8 to 10 then it cleared up and the stars were out ! Sunny here most of the day today and warm but now low clouds and the odd rain here and there ! Glad no damage came of the hail ! Our chicken on the farm ate anything lol . Thanks for sharing . Have a good day !

  5. YOU HAVE CHICKENS????? Ooooo, I want 'em BAD! I grew up with chickens, but I can't have them here--we need another 10 feet of clearance to the back. DANGIT!

  6. Wow that's crazy! They're predicting we might get sizeable hail stones tonight but I'm hoping not.

  7. That's some huge hail! We usually have pretty mild weather here, but it's been super windy lately. Spring is around here somewhere!

  8. Just as I'm reading this, lightning starts flashing through the skylight! I guess we're getting more tonight. We just got baby hails last night. You sure go the big boys!

  10. We got about 4" of snow - and it was 4 degrees when I went out to feed the animals earlier today. I'm afraid to look at the baby plants in the hoop cold frame.

  12. Very odd weather this year. We didn't get hail but the temperature swings have been nuts.

I hope you'll stop by my blog when you have a chance. We share all kinds of backyard chicken keeping advice...and we're going to be giving away some of the new blue vintage-inspired Ball Canning Jars soon, so you'll want to be sure you don't miss that!
