Had some red & yellow Rustoleum Painter's Touch spray paint, so I painted the top...
The dogs just had to investigate, aren't they adorable!!
...and decided it looked pretty neat!! And decided to put it on one of the shepherd's hooks in the bird garden. I have some of the chicken scratch feed in it (Larry bought the wrong kind, we need layer feed, and we can't use it so we figured some wild-life will like it!)
Just noticed I forgot to put the perches back in...have to do that tomorrow.
I spray painted some steel wire yellow to match the cage and secured the door and 'food holder doors' open so the wild-life can get in & out with ease.
And the great thing, the chickens love to scratch around the feeders...they devour all the seed that falls, which is wonderful!! We don't get a lot of weeds growing under the feeders.
Pebbles under the feeder loving the seeds the birds drop
Update:
Even though I had drainage holes in the bottom, when it rained the feed became soggy & clumped together. So now I only use it for the peanuts, and yes, the blue jays love it! They go inside to get their treats...never thought I'd see that!

What a neat idea!!! The chickens are in 7th heaven too!!! Very cool.
ReplyDeleteSo true, the chickens LOVE the feeding station! And I love that they love it. lol

Love how the bright paint transformed it. Great inspiration :-)
ReplyDeleteYes, it pops against the shrubs in the background. Really stands out when you look at it from the courtyard.

Would love to know if the birds do finally use it as a feeder. I've got an old cage in the garage and just might have to convert it. I was thinking of making it into a planter but love the feeder idea.
ReplyDeleteSo far no birds that I've noticed. But the chipmunks still love it! I'll let you know if anything changes...but I think with the other feeders more accessible they will probably stick to them.
DeleteDebbie, what a clever idea. Love the paint job! All the critters will be happy. Thanks so much for visiting and leaving me such a lovely comment. Enjoy the rest of your week. Hugs, Linda

I also got a big black cage like yours and a smaller one from a neighbor that was TRASHING them ... ??? go figure .. not a crafter/refurbisher I suppose ... anyway... can't wait to do something with them too ...;) yea!! thanks for the motivation and idea !
ReplyDeleteGood luck with them, you'll enjoy what you create when you are finished. And so will the birds! Believe it or not, blue jays will go inside the cage to get the peanuts in the shell. And so will chipmunks... :)
