My hours are still crazy at work, soon they will start to level off. Then I will be able to concentrate on my own gardens and home. They have been sadly neglected due to the busyness of work & volunteering. I have managed to get some containers planted, and a couple beds but so much more to do. Really need to get the rest of the plants in cell packs and 4" pots into their homes so they can start growing properly! The courtyard and pool area look full, but that is mainly due to all the tropicals I brought outside for the season.
I've wanted an old ladder for the garden to display smaller pots on. Larry had some old wood and promised to build one for me. When the kids were visiting, Rob (Kaleb's Daddy) said he'd do it...lucky for me, he loves building things! Larry helped him with a couple parts, and I finally have my ladder! I love it...now thinking I need another one. :)

It is bolted to the wall of the pool room so heavy winds won't knock it over. I imagine I'll bring in the plants if that threatens, don't think they'd survive that weather. Of course it looks different now, I changed the plants around, always moving things. :) Have an old crib destined for the garbage. Thinking of a way I can use it in my gardens. It needs to be distressed, the wood still looks too good...a day off project in the future. Finally downloaded the pictures to the computer, and of course I just have to share some with you! Enjoy...
I have so many succulent and cactus, the chore is trying to figure out the names of all of them! They rarely come with the proper labels and there are thousands of varieties. If I have mislabelled a plant, please leave a comment to let me know! :)
Beaucarnea Recurvata 'Ponytail Palm'
Echinopsis
I keep forgetting my camera on the sunny days to capture the flower in full bloom.
I'll post when I remember because it is stunning! And there is another bud which will hopefully be opening soon!

Love my Hoya! Can't wait for it to bloom, may have a couple more years to wait though.

This poor guy is segregated from the others. He had mealy bug and so far it looks like I've licked them, but want to be sure before I return him to his friends.
We hung some of my hanging baskets in the pool room! Love the lush look of it...with more house plants along the side it truly looks like a tropical haven. Notice we only have 1/2 a roof? lol It was starting to deteriorate so Larry took the south side off last year. We loved the sun warming the pool up so we decided to leave it off. :) He is planning to replace the remaining half and I would like the side 'windows' replaced with a clear plexiglass so we can see into the courtyard. Another on the long 'honey-do' list of chores for this old home.
Had to show you this picture I took during a snowstorm this winter. Looks neat the way 1/2 the pool room has snow falling on it and the other 1/2 is dry.

Ok, fast-forwarding back to spring...
Adiantum 'Maidenhair Fern'
Syngonium podophyllum 'White Butterfly'
Look at the flower coming up in the middle!
This tree has been pruned back a couple times to fit in our great room, which has very high ceilings, but is getting too large to move in & out every year. I think I'll have to find a new home for it this fall, and knowing this would eventually happen, I started another one a few years ago. You can see part of it in the next picture, and it is a variegated one!
Crassula obliqua 'Monstrosus' (in the porcelain toilet at top)
Scilla violaceous 'Silver Squill'
Ficus benjamina variegated
A few succulents I'm propagating on the bottom shelf. You can see part of a tomato plant waiting to be planted.
Thanks for visiting. I hope you enjoyed this small part of our gardens. I need to add a story about our chickens and their progress...soon. Have a great night.

My goodness...you have a wonderous succulent collection and such cute planters too! I like to find cute containers and drill holes in bottom also! So fun! I haven't had time to do them the last few years...but one day I will get back to it!
ReplyDeleteThank you, and yes it is fun to use different vessels. :)
ReplyDeleteWOW....I live in the Blue Ridge mountains and we get so much rain in the summer. Do you live in a nice dry area? Your succulents are amazing. Do you have any tips on what type of soil you use or any tips on watering....I think I water mine to much. Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteWe live in South Western Ontario, Canada...so no...we don't live in a dry climate. Well, except for the summers when we have a drought, which we did last summer for about a month & a half. And many of my succulents that I put outdoors for the summer are kept under cover so they don't get the rains. Most of them don't like full sun, so that suits them well.
DeleteI use cactus soil for the most part, but sometimes if I'm out, I'll make my own using a lightweight potting soil adding vermiculite and sand.
I bring most of my succulents indoors for the winter since they won't survive our weather. And yes, one of the reasons most people have a problem with them is because of over watering. Forget about them and they will love it! Especially in the winter. And never fertilize according to the directions on the package. Always do 1/2 the ratio they call for.
You are a no-reply-blogger and your name won't connect, so I hope you see this. I hope my reply helps! :)
Hi Debbie...I don't know what a 'no-reply blogger' is.....but I do see your post! Thank you so much for sharing your potting secrets. Maybe sometime you could do a post on potting up a few of your succulents, sort of like 'succulents for dummies'....:0) I love them and have several but would like to have many more. Our winter are extremely cold too maybe not as cold as you but I bring in a lot of my plants for the winter.
ReplyDeleteMay I also ask....where do you buy perennial hibiscus? I LOVE them but have never heard of them being perennial.
Thank you for your time! You have some lovely plants and your flowers are breath taking! When I grow I up I want to be just like you!!
Since you have to preview this before it posts if you would like to email me, my email is: pjcowpoke@charter.net I am not a blogger maybe that is the problem. My name is Pamela.
Aw, yes, that's why you show as a no reply, you don't have a blog! lol Thank you so much for your comment!
DeleteSorry, I'm so late replying, I've been offline for a while. I'll email you too, but I'm replying here so you see it. I actually just got to publishing a bunch of posts today! Wow, I'm a terrible blogger...
I bought my perennial hibiscus at the nursery I worked at. I've retired, but still shop there...my addiction. You should ask your local nurseries if they carry them. Usually they get them in when they are in flower later in the season, since that's when they sell the best. I've grown them from seed before, too. You can get a larger selection doing it this way.
I'll look into doing a post on potting succulents. Thank you for asking.
Have a great 4th of July! We celebrate our Canada Day on July 1st, this is our long weekend. :)
